The problem
A machine can be fully built, fully wired and physically finished, and still be worth nothing to the customer. Between "installed" and "producing at the agreed rate, tested, accepted and signed off" lies commissioning — and it is the phase where projects lose their margin. The mechanical build ran to plan; the commissioning ran three weeks over because there was nobody who could take the system from powered-up to proven.
The reason this phase is so dangerous is that it sits at the intersection of everyone else's assumptions. The designer assumed the sensors would be positioned as drawn. The installer assumed the sequence would be as specified. The customer assumed acceptance would take two days. Commissioning is where all of those assumptions meet reality at once, under a delivery deadline, in front of a customer who is now paying attention.
A commissioning technician is the profile built for that intersection. Unlike a maintenance technician, who sustains a system that already works, a commissioning technician proves a system for the first time — which is a genuinely different skill. Making a new machine work is not the same as keeping a working machine running, and the calm, methodical temperament it requires is rarer than either raw diagnostic skill or project urgency alone.
Role overview
A commissioning technician brings new equipment into operation and proves that it meets specification. The work begins where installation ends: powering up in a controlled sequence, testing functions individually and then together, setting parameters, finding and clearing the inevitable start-up faults, and building the evidence that the system does what the contract says it does.
A large part of the role is the formal acceptance process. Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) proves the system at the builder's site before shipment; Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) proves it again in the customer's real conditions. Both are evidenced procedures with sign-off, not informal demonstrations, and a commissioning technician who cannot run them methodically will cost the project its acceptance milestone regardless of how well they diagnose.
The role ends with handover: documentation completed, the customer's operators and maintenance team trained, and the early-life problems resolved before the technician leaves. Commissioning technicians work for machine builders, system integrators and equipment suppliers, and the role is heavily project- and travel-based — often weeks on a customer site, sometimes abroad.
When your company needs this profile: when you build, integrate or supply equipment that must be proven and accepted at a customer's site. If the work is sustaining equipment that already runs, you want maintenance or service; if it is deep control-system work, an automation technician. Commissioning is the profile you hire to get from installed to accepted.

The best diagnostic technician in your maintenance team is not automatically a good commissioning technician. Commissioning rewards a particular disposition: methodical sequencing, disciplined record-keeping, comfort being the visible technical authority in front of a customer, and the patience to prove a thing rather than assume it. Test for that disposition directly, because it does not show up on a skills list and it is the thing that most often fails.

Commissioning experience is best assessed by what a candidate has taken from installed to accepted, and whether they owned the acceptance or merely assisted.

Commissioning proves a new system works for the first time and gets it accepted; maintenance keeps an already-working system available over its life. They are genuinely different skills. Making a new machine reach its specified rate for the first time — clearing start-up faults with no maintenance history to draw on — is not the same as sustaining a machine whose behaviour is already known. Many technicians are better at one than the other.
Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) proves a system against specification at the builder's site before it ships. Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) proves it again in the customer's real operating conditions after installation. Both are formal, evidenced procedures leading to sign-off, and running them properly — with documentation that stands up — is central to the commissioning role. Ask candidates whether they have owned FAT and SAT or only assisted.

Travel is the single most common reason a commissioning offer is declined, so establish the specifics — weeks per project, destinations, notice — early and state them in the vacancy.
Because commissioning happens under an acceptance deadline, in front of the customer, at the point where every upstream assumption meets reality. A technician who is brilliant but assumes rather than proves, or who cannot stay methodical when acceptance is tomorrow, will cost the project its milestone. The disposition — calm, sequenced, evidence-driven, customer-ready — is as decisive as the technical skill.
Sometimes, but do not assume it. The skills overlap but the demands differ: commissioning needs someone comfortable proving an unproven system, running formal acceptance, and being the visible technical authority at handover, often while travelling. Some maintenance technicians thrive on that; others are excellent precisely because they prefer a known system and a home site. Test for the commissioning disposition specifically.
Commonly formal vocational or post-secondary qualifications in mechatronics, automation, electrical engineering or a related technical field. The Western Balkans has established technical education pathways, and machine-building experience is common. Level, specialisation and recognition vary by individual and country and must be confirmed with the competent authority.
