The problem
Service is the one technical function that has been contractually promised before it is staffed. A response-time commitment in a service agreement is a liability the moment it is signed, and the customer measures you against it on the worst possible day — theirs. Unlike internal maintenance, where a delay is absorbed internally, a short-staffed service team defaults on an obligation in front of the person paying for it.
The compounding is worse than in maintenance. Missed response times generate escalations; escalations consume the technicians who would otherwise be doing planned service; planned service slips; the equipment that was not serviced fails; and the failure arrives as another emergency call. A service team can spend an entire year inside that loop, working flat out, with customer satisfaction falling the whole time.
What makes the role genuinely hard to hire for is that it is two jobs at once. The technical work is real — diagnosis under time pressure, on equipment you may not have seen this month, often without the documentation you wanted. And at the same time the technician *is* the company for the duration of the visit. A brilliant diagnostician who cannot explain a delay to an angry plant manager will lose you the account they just repaired.
Role overview
A service technician diagnoses, repairs and maintains equipment on behalf of the company that supplied or supports it. The defining feature is ownership: the equipment belongs to a customer, not to the employer. That single fact changes the work more than any technical detail. There is no institutional memory of the machine, no colleague who was there last time, and no option to leave it until tomorrow because the shift ended.
The work runs across workshop repairs, planned preventive service visits, emergency callouts, retrofits and upgrades, and the reporting that follows. A service technician is often the only person from the company the customer will meet all year, which is why service reports and explanations matter as much as the repair itself — they are the evidence that the contract is being honoured.
They work for machine builders, equipment suppliers, energy companies and technical service providers. The role is field-based, workshop-based, or both. If the work is predominantly mobile and the technician is essentially autonomous on the road, that is closer to a field service technician; if it is predominantly workshop with occasional visits, the demands are quite different.
When your company needs this profile: when you sell or support equipment that other people operate, and your obligations to them are technical. If the equipment is your own and the goal is availability, you want a maintenance technician. If the work is bringing new equipment into operation rather than sustaining installed equipment, you want a commissioning technician.

Profiles may have experience with the areas below. Service technicians vary enormously by equipment category — someone who services industrial refrigeration and someone who services packaging machines have both done service and would need to start over in each other's role.
The competency that separates strong service technicians is decision-making without support. In a plant, an uncertain technician asks a colleague. On a customer site at 19:00, there is no colleague — there is a decision about whether to run the machine tonight, and a customer waiting for it. Ask candidates about a time they had to make that call. The answer reveals judgement, honesty and how they handle being the only technical authority in the room.

Service experience is defined by equipment category far more than by sector. Ask what they have serviced, and whether they serviced it alone.

Not “yes”. How many nights away per month, at what notice, to which countries. This is the single most common cause of a failed service hire.
Have they worked alone on a customer site, or always alongside a colleague? These are different jobs.
The specific categories. Service knowledge transfers poorly across equipment types.
Ask them to explain a technical failure to you as if you were the customer. The gap between candidates here is large.
Especially with incomplete documentation on unfamiliar equipment.
Service reports are the contractual evidence. A technician who does not write them creates a liability.
Useful context. It says nothing about whether they can operate alone.
Service is a spoken role. Verify against the languages your customers actually use.
Usually essential. Confirm validity and recognition in the country of work.
Cross-border service work can raise posting and permit questions. Confirm with the competent authority.
Recruitment
Be specific about travel, autonomy and equipment before anything else. These filter harder than any technical requirement.

FAQ
Ownership. A maintenance technician looks after the employer's own equipment, with colleagues, history and a maintenance record around them. A service technician looks after a customer's equipment, frequently alone, often without that history, and under a contractual obligation. The technical skills overlap heavily; the working conditions and the required autonomy do not.
Field service is service where mobility dominates: the technician is essentially permanently on the road, plans their own days, and works autonomously by default. A service technician may be predominantly workshop-based with occasional visits. If your role means most nights are away from home, describe it as field service and recruit for it as such — the candidate pool is genuinely different.
It varies from local day trips to sustained international travel, and it is the factor that decides most service hires. Do not ask “are you willing to travel” — everyone says yes. Ask how many nights per month, at what notice, and to which countries. Then state the same in the vacancy.
Yes, and it is not a soft extra. For the duration of the visit the technician is the company. They explain what failed, what it will cost, and why the machine cannot run tonight — often to someone under pressure. A technically excellent candidate who cannot hold that conversation will still lose accounts.
Test the two halves separately. For the technical half, describe a fault on unfamiliar equipment with incomplete documentation and listen to how they narrow it down. For the customer half, ask them to explain a past failure to you as though you were the customer paying for it. Most interviews test only the first and are surprised by the second in month two.
Commonly formal vocational or post-secondary qualifications in mechanical, electrical, mechatronic or refrigeration fields, depending on the equipment. The Western Balkans has established technical education pathways. Level, specialisation and recognition vary by individual and country and must be confirmed with the competent authority.
